DESIGN IN THE CITY. About this year’s edition of DESIGN CITY LX FESTIVAL.

DESIGN IN THE CITY. About this year’s edition of DESIGN CITY LX FESTIVAL.

For the 5th time already Luxembourg is celebrating design, art and craftsmanship on a large scale. Every two years the local design industry is in the focus for several weeks with a bunch of events, exhibitions and interesting cooperations. The theme „Me craft - You industry - We design“ forms the headline for the edition of 2018 that will be held from 19 October until 18 November.

My favourites of the agenda are already the collaboration between Mudam, who organises the festival together with the City, and Wallpaper (see main image) who sets up their famous pop up store with the highlights of the contemporary designs they usually sell online. Also Luxembourgish designs have been added to the range. The fans and followers of the leading design magazine will love it unavoidably. And it’s actually quite exciting to have a Wallpaperstore in our City after having seen former ones in Milan, Copenhagen, Cape Town, Beirut and during this year’s Biennale in Venice.

Also an interesting approach to introduce designers to a broader audience and to support their business in a more commercial yet adequate environment is the initiative „Adopt a Designer“. On Saturday and Sunday (21 October 2018) designers of all disciplines - such as fashion, furniture, graphic etc. - are moving into mainly fashion and interior boutiques in town to display some of their work. All designers will be present too and certainly happy to talk about their creations and answer questions. It’s a great chance to upgrade the shopping tour with some inspirational, educational elements. The Boutique M. Weydert „adopted“ Studio delle Alpi, a design duo based from Luxembourg (Anne Kieffer) and Belgium (Arnaud Mouriamé) both working and living between the Grand Duchy and Milan, designing kids toys and furniture. Kitzel Fabrik Jacques Schneider is guest at C&A, Ezri Kahn will be at La Maroquinerie du Passage, Christophe de la Fontaine (Dante Goods and Bads) is hosted by Paul Smith - to name but a very few of the more than 20 teams in total.

These highlighted events are flanked by many more features such as open door events of local architecture, art and design studios, creative communities like „Bamhaus“ in Beggen or the fashion design studio of Vol(t)age in the Gare district. Indoor as well as outdoor installations line the city and bring, again, international flair to Luxembourg. Boijeot Renauld are showing their Hotel Empire which was exhibited along Broadway in New York in the past already (see image below). Screenings around Bauhaus and other cultural as well as design topics are broadcasted at Cinémathèque and Mudam. Also parties are part of Design City LX Festival: The bar and club „Gudde Wëllen“ in the Old Town is hosting the official Opening Party on 20 October as well as the Closing Party on 17 November.
